Degradable packaging
Choosing a greener alternative
![]()
The packaging sector is coming under increasing pressure from government legislation, media pressure & the general public to offer its clients a greener alternative to traditional supplies.
Orchard Packaging fully embrace the environmental issues we currently face & are able to offer advice & solutions specific to your requirements.
It is fair to say that recycling is often the preferred method however when talking specifically about plastic films local authorities simply do not provide facilities to recycle. With the variety of plastic films in circulation it is near impossible for the consumer to identify & segregate accordingly, even if a logo specific to each type is adopted cross contamination is still inevitable. In addition to this plastic films can only be recycled if they are free from all contaminants & this is a major issue in itself!
The majority of plastic film waste ends up in landfill & will take hundreds of years to degrade however there is now a choice of additives we can introduce into specific films at the point of extrusion that will totally degrade the plastic within a programmable timeframe, usually between 2-5 years.
The Publishing industry, endorsed by the PPA for example have recommended to all members that they adopt oxo biodegradable films & here at Orchard we are able to meet these demands & are currently supplying the majority of our publishing clients with this specification.
Different industries will require or prefer different solutions. Here at Orchard we are able to offer our client base a variety of options & information on which you can base your decisions.
